Highways England Launch New tailgating Campaign

What is tailgating?

Tailgating is where one car is following another car too closely to be able to safely stop without causing harm to the car or driver infront, or not leaving the recommended at least 2 second gap between vehicles.

Highways England launch New Campaign

Highways England have announced their new campaign to help raise awareness of tail gating and the dangers of driving too close to the car in front of you.

It is said that more than a hundred people are killed or have been seriously hurt annually due to drivers tailgating, and High ways England also report that 9 out of 10 drivers claim to have been tailgated at some point whilst driving.
Further more a survey they carried out showed shocking results of drivers admitting that they have tailgated cars in the past few months, 1 in 4 to be precise. The campaign is being endorsed by Formula One World Champion, Nigel Mansell.

Why do drivers tailgate?

There are a number of reasons why drivers tailgate the most popular reason is unintentional. We as drivers simply go into auto pilot, when doing the same journey all the time, or have been driving on a motor way for a long time. Drivers are shutting off and are not thinking about the distance they are leaving.
Others are frustrated drivers who want to get somewhere quicker and foolishly feel that by tailgating it will encourage the driver in front to drive faster. Whilst others refuse to slow down if another driver pulls out and not judged the speed of the path of cars sufficiently.

What is the right distance between traveling cars?

According to the highway code there should be at least a 2 second gap between cars when traveling, and this should be doubled if road conditions are wet. Unfortunately I personally have found that when I have been driving on the motorway leaving a safe gap, other drivers decide that this has been left for them to slide into!
